School board

The school board controls school property, establishes, organizes, and operates the schools of the district, including: establishing schools, adopting enrollment plans, providing for school elimination and consolidation, cooperating with school boards of adjoining districts in maintaining schools, maintaining the school year schedule and other more specific duties as outlined in the Florida statute. [8]

It operates, controls and supervises the district's public schools as well as determines the rate of school district taxes, with the option of two or more school districts operating and financing educational programs together.

Below are the school board district board members: [9]

The current Superintendent is Dr. John L. Ruis. [9] The school board members and the superintendent are elected every four years. [10]

School Budget

The total spending budget for the district is $81,801,000, which is split into four general segments which guide spending:[11]

  • Instruction: $38,302,000
  • Teacher Salaries: $28,374,000
  • Pupils: $2,533,000
  • Total Support Services: $25,164,000

In March 2009 the school district announced that it is planning to cut the 2009-2010 budget by $8 million. As part of the budget cuts Atlantic Elementary School will be closed. This is in addition to the $5.5 million in reductions from the 2008-2009 budget. [12]

The County is also accepting $827,699 from the allocations under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.[13] There are currently enrolled in the district 10,866 students.[11]

Academic Performance

2007-2009

The Nassau County School District has received an 'A' rating for the 2008-2009 school year, with nine schools receiving an 'A' rating and none receiving an 'F'. [1]

Below is a chart of the school's grade based on the student's performance of the statewide test called the FCAT.[16]

West Nassau County High School is contesting their 'D' result attributing it to a reporting error. Due to the poor performance of the lowest quartile of the test takers, the Nassau County School Board is reviewing NCHS' Principal Ron Booker during contract renewals. The school's grade has fluctuated from a B to a D since his tenure. [17]

Unions

The Nassau Education Support Personnel Association is the teachers' union for this district, and is an affiliate of the Florida Education Association. [18]
