National government sector lobbying
Contents |
This practice is controversial because public funds are spent to lobby for an agenda not subject to direct approval by voters, and outcomes may be contrary taxpayers benefit.
Issues are varied. The U.S. Conference of Mayors, for example, lobbied for "shovel-ready" projects under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also know as the economic stimulus package.[1] The U.S. Conference of Mayors specifically wanted the funds from the Act to go directly to cities, as opposed to being funneled through state governments.
The following is a list of national government sector lobbying associations. These organizations are partly or completely funded by tax dollars, either with direct payments from government treasuries or via employee reimbursement for "professional association dues." They represent local and state governments from across the country, where state-specific associations only represent governments within that state.
